Educational Background: Dr. Illum earned his bachelors degree from Brigham Young University with a major in anthropology/archaeology and his masters degree in recreation management and public administration from the same institution. His doctoral degree in recreation and resources development, marketing and rural sociology was awarded by Texas A&M University.
Experience Background: Dr. Illum has both teaching and industry experience in tourism and private/commercial recreation. He has published numerous articles relative to travel and tourism and served as an editor of Annals of Tourism Research for 20 years, and currently serves as an editor for Anatolia: International Journal of Tourism & Hospitality. He has traveled extensively and attended many conferences making presentations related to tourism and other topics.
Professional Expertise and Interest Areas: travel, tourism (especially heritage & rural tourism), private/commercial recreation, programming, special events, convention management, writing, publishing, festivals, resource management, travel and disability. Dr. Illum directs the Missouri State University Office of Leisure Research.
